Not perfect but still a great NAS! I agree with some of the criticisms leveled against the EFG80. Yes, its not exactly cheap (but quality has a price), the fan is a bit noisy (but there's no chance this baby will ever overheat), and it would be nice if it supported some RAID functions like mirroring (though the built in backup does essentially the same thing). However, after installing the EFG80 in my home network, I am now firmly convinced that the positives far out-way any negatives. First, quality, reliability and stability: this unit is built to last and, with its firmware Linux OS, it's practically bulletproof! Second, performance: Its fast! Boots up fast, shuts down fast, and file transfers are actually faster than to a PC. The supplied hard drive is so quiet (Seagate Barracuda V) that the fan is the only thing you hear. Third, ease of use: the administrative controls are very straightforward and functional. I just plugged it in and had full interoperability with my network. Since I'm running W2k, I haven't noticed any of the connectivity problems reported by XP users (just one more reason to avoid XP IMHO). Finally, it just looks cool: it's consistent with the Linksys color scheme and looks great sitting next to the rest of my Linksys network stack! All in all, I am extremely pleased with this NAS. Buggy, unreliable firmware, horrible customer support The firmware of the EFG-80 is based on a hack of some open source code, mainly linux and samba. It is not properly tested and even moderate use I have discovered a few bugs, one of them critical.The documentation is very shallow technically, and gives no insight as to how to best use the device or good troubleshooting tips.I have discovered a crippling bug in the firmware (among others) and couldn't get Linksys customer service to escalate it to engineering. All they did is repeat the same troubleshooting steps listed in the user manual. When I suggested they escalate the bug to engineering, they answered that they "would mention it to their training department"!!!In a nutshell, dealing with Linksys customer support for this device is a nightmare. For those interested, the bug exhibits itself when more than 5 or 6 shares are created from the "default location". The web-based administration module crashes for good, and the administrator can never login after that. I cannot recommend this device for any serious business use. Great item, LOUSY DISTRIBUTOR I own an EFG80, which is an outstanding device to use on a SOHO network for backup. I bought extra drive trays from Linksys toeasily be able to exchange drives. The device was so useful,I decided to add a second, bringing my storage capacity to 1/2 terabyte. That was when the hassles began.Amazon listed the item as being in-stock, but sold through theirmarketplace (troygift.com). Apparently there is some ambiguityabout what "in-stock" means. My understanding of "in-stock" isone has direct control of at least one item and is ready todeliver it. If YOU have that same expectation of what the termmeans, find another distributor who shares your opinion, becauseapparently Amazon and troygift.com (should be TRYgift) don't.

Intermediate Users Delight I purchased my Synology NAS about two months ago, having followed the guidance of reviewers at Amazon and elsewhere, as well as tech-bloggers who wrote about the various abilities of an NAS. I found this model to suit my needs. I do a lot of work at home, and--slowly--my PC has begun to fill all of my multimedia needs (from movies and music to comic books). So I needed something that I could access from several computers like an external hard drive, but something that could also serve my other devices as well (PS3, XBOX360, etc.) It took some time for me to get the Synology working. The Synology's software is simple and elegant, and can have you connected to this drive with lots of menus and options--but to plan a transfer of all of your files, to get a smooth, solid connection and learn how to really harness the power of the sucker will take beginners time. The software that the Synology comes with worked well. Within an hour or so I had mirrored two terrabyte drives, was happily transferring data between my computer and my server, and had scheduled a back-up. I had also plugged my old external in and was accessing that from another computer. It took me fifteen minutes to hook my printer up--very plug and play. I already save every file I save directly to the server now instead of my desktop. Now I rarely use the software, opting to use Windows 7 to manually move files around and back up. Instead of using the torrent manager, I simply set up bittorrent to download to the server like a file location, which is much easier than starting some other program and dropping torrent files in. The software (and the managing options you can use in your web browser) won't get you through some of the more intricate setting-up. I still haven't been able to figure out how to get the DS209 to run as an ftp server. You will need to be familiar with your router to even begin changing the settings to get it right. The Photo-blog component is the same--I imagine it will take an hour of internet-searching and question-asking to get these two things going. The amount of support (pdfs, tutorials, etc.) is lacking for such a powerful machine with so many functions. Most of the time when you search the available help sections for how to get a desired option working you'll get a poorly written description of the app and nothing more. I was on the message boards pretty quickly after plugging my DS209 in, figuring out the little things that I was missing. The DS209+ is a stable NAS that works well as a primary storage device and media server. A beginner will find no major difficulty in setting up and using the major functions of this equipment, but will likely struggle in configuring the more advanced options available to them. As the on-line collection of knowledge is broadened by other users, the problem of lacking literature and help should resolve itself, but Synology themselves should provide more quality assistance and tutorials for their customers. Otherwise, the product is quite literally sold short--as users may not be able to use the more advanced components without becoming more advanced themselves. Great Solution! I've been running the NAS for a week now and have been very pleased with the features and performance. It only took about 1/2 hour from the time I opened the box to having it up and running on the network. Very simple. Install a drive, plug it in, turn it on and install the software from your desktop computer. Then start configuring what you want to use. The interface is easy to navigate to and use. I started with a 250GB drive I had lying around and wasn't using. Once I received my 1.5TB drive, I was able to easily transfer everything to it by backing up the NAS to an eSATA drive attached, then installing the new drive and restoring from the eSATA. I have another 1.5TB drive coming in tomorrow and will be able to dynamically set up a RAID 1 (mirror# so I have redundancy. The speed of the transfers is great. I am getting just under 40MB/sec upload and just over 40MB/sec download rates. I'm using the Photo Station and love it. Just drag and drop the photo album to the share and it builds the online photo album. I set up a few accounts for friends and family and that's it! I am giving the albums and pictures descriptions and this will take a long time since I just put 10 years of albums on there. But users can access it now and leave comments. I'm using the blog and like this as well. I've never blogged before but will give this a shot and see if I like posting. It is, again, very easy to set up and use. I'm also using the Web Station to host a website. It is running on JOOMLA and mySQL and works great. I was able to uninstall php, mySQL, and Apache from my system since I don't need it running anymore. I also don't have to worry about rebooting my system. Finally, the UPnP DMA works great for sharing my media library to other PCs, the Xbox 360 and PS3. They saw the Diskstation right away and were able to browse and play the media #video, mp3 & photo) just fine. Backups were easy to use. I've tried both the Data Replicator and pointing my norton 360 to the NAS and both worked well. The Download station was tried but I didn't really like that feature. If I download a bitorrent, I want more control than it gives. I don't have an IP camera so also didn't try the survelliance station.. That's about it! The only regret is that I didn't splurge another $100 for the 4 drive model. :) Great for home users with some networking experience This item is well packaged, and is great for adding centralized storage to your home network. This item ships without any firmware installed, and at first is a bit confusing on getting setup. The instructions imply that you can do the initial setup by connecting to the devices home page. You will have to do the initial setup using the Assistant, and install the firmware. After doing this step, and assigning an IP address on your network, the disk station will be able to be further administered via the web interface. All features are fairly self explanatory for basic use. However, customizing features such as the blog site and photo station can be somewhat confusing. One other small caveat is that if you plan to use the disk station's streaming ability for audio with an iPhone is that it will only play music that is not DRM protected.

Works as described. A good value and a useful tool. I purchased this to have safe backups of all of my photos and music. Having lost a hard drive (not backed up) last year and my external drive being at capacity, and a bit finicky lately I was concerned about the safety of my data. I purchased this as an insurance policy against losing the treasured images of my family, friends and travel I have accumulated over the years. I researched options and found this unit to be the best value to meet my needs. My needs (and wants) included: Double back up of data (RAID) Enough space to back up current drives (600GB) Network-able so I can share to laptop Out of the box this feels like a quality piece. At about 6 pounds it feels solid in your hands. Case is simple and attractive but would have preferred a black case over white. It comes with a wall-wart power supply and an ethernet cable. There is USB port but no cable is provided. One simple vertical white light is the only physical user interface. Aside from the color a very handsome package. My only issue is that the light NEVER goes out completely and is relatively bright. Consider that when deciding where to position it. Id prefer that the light have a sleep mode that would shut it off after a period of inactivity. Set up is as simple as plugging it in and patching the network cable to your router. The included software does the rest. It finds the drives and maps them to your machine. The software must be loaded onto any machine on your network that you want to have access to the drive or to backup. A simple and pain free process. Moving data to the drive is time consuming. Transfer speeds are slower than both my external and internal drives (not unexpected). Not a deal killer, just be aware that the initial data transfer will take a while. Once loaded the read/transfer speed is fast enough to stream music and movies to my laptop without issue. You'll notice that write speed was not one of my requirements as this is a back up & RAID drive. The drive has no fans so it is very quiet. Even when read/writing and sitting right on top of my desk I rarely notice it. I am a bit concerned about the long term viability considering it doesn't have fans and the venting on the top, bottom and back panels will let in a lot of dust. I have not as yet set up a MioNet account (free with purchase, otherwise $79/Yr.) so I can't comment on its usefulness or interface. In summary this unit has met my expectations for what I needed. No unpleasant surprises but no exceeded expectations. From a pricing standpoint it's a good value. Today the drives inside retail for $99 each. So you are paying $149 for a case, power supply, software, ability to network and a cable. A good deal in my book. I don't hesitate to recommend the product and deduct a star (remember thats 20%) for the Cons noted below. I sleep better now knowing my pictures and media have a better chance of surviving through my lifetime. Pros: Peace of mind knowing pics are safe Easy to set-up and network Easy to use software Quality construction Everything included Free MioNet account Cons: Slow write speed Always-on status light Great choice for a media server I just installed this on my home network with the intention of centralizing my media storage. I was immediately impressed and surprised with just how easy it was to set up media sharing across my whole network. The included twonky media server works as expected (in fact better, I like the firmware version more than I like the PC), and comes with options for streaming internet Radio. To give you an idea how it works, when you install the system it creates two mapped drives on your PC. One of these, the "public" folder, contains additional folders for songs, pictures, and video. You simply copy over your media to the appropriate folder. I was then able to immediately play them on my DNLA enabled devices (a Denon AVR 4308 CI, and a Sony KDL-W-5100 series TV). Set up honestly couldn't have been easier. The out-of-the box RAID configuration was also a plus, and I've also had good luck with WD's backup program. MIOnet itself seems to work as advertised. Yes, it can be slow, but I use direct mapping of drives vs. mio. Works flawlessly Purchased a week ago. Finished backing up all of my stuff. So far I am very happy with the purchase. Pros (1) Easy to use. I started copying files 15 min after opened the box (I did some configuration before actually start using it). Web interface is intuitive and easy to use. (2) Small. I put it in the TV cabinet (next to my DVR) (3) Cheap (in terms of price per GB) compared with other small home NAS. (4) Quiet. Never noticed a noise. (5) Customizable. Some options which required some hacking for older versions are now available through the web interface. For example, you can easily... - Turn off Mionet - Enable SSH - Enable FTP - Change between Raid 0 and 1 (6) I think the blue light is cool (as opposed to another reviewer who wants to turn it off). (7) Default is Raid0 (Mirror). I remember somebody mentioned that the default used to be Raid1 for an older version of My Book, but that's not the case anymore. Cons (not many) (1) A bit slower compared with newer (and more expensive) models. But unless you are copying a coupleof GB files like movies, I did not find it a serious problem. Actually, (I might be wrong but...) I feel that the machine is more responsive after turning off Mionet. I use SFTP to access remotely which is fast enough and my guess is it is faster than through Mionet. (2) It would have been nice if I can connect the unit to my PC through Firerie, eSATA or USB for a faster initial backup. All in all, so far I am a happy customer. The only thing I have to figure out is a way to do the incremental backup without using the default software. (does it require mionet?) I also want to try the media streaming function (using DLNA). I might add to this review after I try these things.

Works great! Purchased this product about a month ago and it works great. Took about 5 minutes to get set up and it's been running ever since (XP Home SP2). I've got a bunch of music and pix that I store on it, as well as my weekly backups of my desktop. They got a 750gig drive too, so if I had to do it over, I'd probably get that one for the extra space. Backup software included is a nice touch too! Highly recommend! Not ready for prime time I recently bought this product, specifically because I needed both backup and print server capabilities for my home wireless setup, which includes Mac OS-X and Windows XP machines. The first thing I noticed is that the drive is extremely loud. The culprit here seems to be the airflow, not the machinery, since it's just about silent if I block the air exhausts in the back of the device (clearly, a VERY short-term solution.) Don't plan to share your work or living space with this gadget. I plugged it into my wireless router for use as a network drive, and discovered that set-up is a pain in the neck, because the instructions are so opaque. (You're told to enter the "printer address", for example, and if you don't know that means "//Iomega-01c516/Printer1", well, good luck to you.) The software at first did not find the drive on the network; the installer's "help" window said it did not work with this model drive, while the manual insisted it could do so. Fortunately, the manual was correct, and after a reboot I was able to find and mount the drive. Mapping the drive took some experimenting as well - the instructions don't mention that you can't do this until you've set up users and passwords and shared folders (another project in itself, with no guidance about what the heck it is that you're doing.) And it asked for a user name and password, leaving me to guess if that's the XP admin password, the drive admin password, or a drive user name and password. It was not the user name the software threw up by default, nor was it my email address, which -bizarrely- was the other option in the drop-down list. (Are you getting the picture here?) Oh, and forget about Mac OS-X Leopard - the software launched by the installer CD "quit unexpectedly". Restarting and relaunching didn't help. So much for my "network storage solution". And the print server doesn't support my printer (an HP PSC 1210xi). Discovering this AFTER buying the drive was a real downer. AND, from reading various forums, the print server is only capable of handling small files (a few pages of text, and definitely no photos. ) Iomega doesn't tell you any of this up front, which is unforgivable. Hours of Googling and reading various forums hasn't come up with any fixes for these problems -- although it does reveal that I'm not alone. I realize that there are some good reviews out there, so evidently this thing works for some people: those who are experienced in setting up networks, who have all-Windows networks, and who are lucky enough to have a printer actually supported by the device. (People who write magazine reviews, for example.) If you share those qualifications, this may well be the network drive of your dreams. SO ... do I downgrade my Mac OS back to the earlier version, and buy a new printer (and hope it's supported), or do I send this undercooked turkey back to the kitchen? HAH! All in all, this purchase was a disaster, and I wasted uncounted hours turning the air blue while trying to get it to do just the basic stuff it's supposed to be able to do. It's the first product I've ever sent back purely because of crappy performance. Iomega 33784 This item seems to do the job,,,BUT it is very noisy!!!! I called the Iomega help center and was told is noisy because it has a cooling fan and is is just the was it is! He told me to put it in a different room or closet! Not really helpful!!!
