Get the Linkstation Pro Duo and not this one3
I bought this LinkStation Live and everything was great and easy (compared to the SimpleShare NAS that I bought a couple years earlier), until I wanted to use the storage for remote backup of my workstations within my home network, which used Work Groups and not Active Directory and no Domain. To allow access of one device or computer to another, the work group name, user name and password has to exist and be identical.

I am following best practices for my password selection, which means that administrative users have long passwords using letters, numbers and special characters.

The current firmware of the LinkStation Live (2.10) does not allow passwords that are longer than 8 characters and no special characters, except for dash (-) and underscore (_). Characters like $, #, %, *, @ etc. are prohibited.

I was stunned and didn't believe my eyes, which read that error message. I am now supposed to lower my password security on all machines and devices within the network and perform administrative tasks across multiple devices. Unbelievable!

The "1TB Linkstation Pro Duo Nas Gbe 2X 500GB Raid 0 1 Web Access" does NOT have this limitation. Do yourself a favor and get that one instead. The price difference is marginal (about $30 more).

I also read about issues with special characters in file names, but have not encountered it myself yet, because the issue is supposed to be related to the FTP service, which is build-into the LinkStation and that I don't use.

Everything else is peachy and easy to use. The mentioned flaws in this version of the LinkStation did catch me by surprise and completely unprepared, but is IMO to point out and make you aware of.

Device looses password settings1
This device worked well for a while. After trying to do a backup, the admin password did not work any more, and numerous attempts to access the data, resetting the password, calling tech support, upgrading the firmware, and so on, did not fix the problem. Tech support is lousy: you wait a long time, and then they mostly blame you. I am finally giving up, and will buy another device from the competition.

This drive failed just after its 1yr anniversary thereby making it unqualified for warranty replacement.
